"The main character tells his story in what's meant to be a vernacular style.
He wants to find out who killed his friend and get retribution. Maybe I just
don't appreciate it as much as I should, but although I could follow it, I
never found the voice entirely convincing, and would suspect that this
language could date quite a lot in a few years. The author's a probation
officer and I thought his send-up of one such person in the book was quite
funny. There were other moments I really liked. But overall the book's
rather bleak and hopeless and I'm uncomfortable with the author trying to
