"This is a well-woven tapestry of suspense based on history's Poison Affair.
This scandal implicated a number of prominent people at the court of King Louis
XIV and is the compelling thread throughout this novel. The tart, scrupulous
and risible letters of Lislelotte, the king's German sister-in-law, relates the
main text. She and Monsieur le Duc offer the greatest insights and a dark humor
amidst conspiracy, murder, witchcraft and deviant impulses of those lives
revolving around the Sun King. The story is a complex, ironic and lush
unmasking of this era of French history.
The switch from first person narration to letters to omniscient narration can
be disconcerting at first, yet this novel pulls itself together quickly and
believably.
A gem." - Jennifer Jordan |
