My mother loves these books because they aren't full of "sex and gory violence", and I agree with her, but there is a lot more to these books, even if they ARE cozies.
Diane Mott Davidson has created a character with which many women today can identify. A battered wife of a socially prominent physician, Goldy Bear could be any of us. Her attempts to protect her son [and he to protect her], her fears, her attempts to support herself, her experiences dealing with the community, and with those who don't believe her, and even her friendship with her ex-husband's OTHER ex-wife ring true-to-life. The escapades that result from her catering service and her involvement with murder are the frosting on the cake. If all of this wasn't enough, the menus and recipes from Goldy's catering service are included, and believe me, I've saved every one!
However, there is a down-side to Davidson's books . . . after all this time, Goldy is STILL a victim, of both her ex-husband, and her son. Hopefully, in today's world, Davidson will write some help for Goldy into the series! Her son really needs a wake-up call!
