The Chestnut-backed Chickadee
They are everywhere! It was a great nesting season for
our Chestnut-backed Chickadees. We have heard many reports of multiple broods raised this year. (The
typical brood is about 3 young, raised successfully). We even had the pleasure of having a
successful nesting at the rear of our parking lot. The young from the latest broods have all left
the nest. You can see them at your peanut, suet, and sunflower feeders. They stay loyal to your
feeders and will visit them all year long. A study in the Midwest showed that on average, chickadees
that visit feeders, and thereby supplement their foraging, then lay one more egg and raise one more
fledgling in each brood. Listen for their distinctive call, "tseek-a-dee-dee".

The Droll Yankee Flipper
We have had many great reports on this feeder. It is
truly the closest thing to a squirrel-proof feeder we have ever seen or used. This battery-operated
(rechargeable) feeder reacts to a squirrel’s weight on the perch, spinning until the squirrel
flies off. The base of the feeder spins enough to keep the squirrels off, but does not harm them.
Your feeder is protected from one of nature’s most notorious moochers, and you get to enjoy a
little backyard comedy. The tube is so long that squirrels can’t hang from the top to reach the
four feeding ports.
The feeder holds more than four quarts of seed.

Meet the Western Tanager
This tanager nests in the Sierra and passes through locally
both on the way to and from its nesting territories. The beautiful male has a red head, while the
female is yellow all over. Watch for these spectacular visitors during the next few weeks.
