Decorating an outdoor tree for the birds:

  • Strung popcorn ropes [use carpet thread]

  • Strung fresh cranberries

  • Thick, fresh orange slices

  • Dried apple rings

  • Dried figs on a string

  • Peanuts in the shell under the tree

  • Tiny fresh crab apples with stem

  • Baby dried corn bundles

  • Large ears of dried, colorful corn with husks

  • Whole walnuts for squirrels under the tree

  • Rice cakes

  • Red flame seedless grapes tied up in bunches

  • Coconut shell pieces

  • Tufts of quilt filler for decoration

  • Tiny lengths of natural wool or string [for Spring nesting]

  • Natural rough brown sting, ribbon and raffia for hanging and decoration

  • Pinecones packed with suet, nuts, and raisins

  • Pinecones packed with peanut butter mixed with cornmeal or seed.

A living, growing tree should be used, as you may attract squirrels and other critters whose weight might upset an artificial tree.

Stuffing for pinecones:

  • 1 cup chunky peanut butter
  • 1 cup suet
  • 2½ cups coarse yellow corn meal to thicken
  • Raisins and/or peanuts
  • Pinecones and twine to hang

Mix chunky peanut butter, suet and corn meal together.
Pack mixture into pinecones and hang.
