4. Bewick's Wrens Coming to Feeders
Bewick's Wrens are being
reported in some backyards eating suet and sunflower chips. Until recently we had NEVER heard of
them visiting feeders. This wren is primarily an insectivore. It is normally seen hoping around tree
limbs or shrubs, gleaning small insects. The fact that it is now visiting feeders is a good example
of the opportunistic adaptability of birds. They are always looking for new sources of food. They
observe other birds eating and try it for themselves. Another example of this adaptability is the
Lesser Goldfinch. Prior to about 3 years ago it was hardly ever seen at thistle feeders. Now we see
them there year round.

Bewick's Wrens are 5.5 inches long.
They have a pointed bill, a large white eyebrow, gray underneath, and gray-brown above. They tail
often flicks from side to side as they hop around. They are cavity nesters and will use nest boxes.
