Ok, I'll be the first to admit that it's been a while and that I've been remiss in my duties. No excuses, I just haven't written one of these in a while. But, I'm writing now. And who knows? Maybe someone is still reading them!

So, where to start?

Movies Update, Recently watched include:

Rock Star- Fun movie for anyone one who has ever seen Behind The Music on VH-1. It seems to start in the eighties during a Heavy Metal revival period, and takes us up to the grunge period. A cute movie, and some fun rock music.

Ed Gein - Now, this one I'm guessing was meant to be straight to video. Cheaply made, a few liberties taken, but surprising contained some real facts. We knew going in it would be schlocky, and it was. Unless you are a real follower of mad man and serial killer stuff, don't bother.

The Forsaken - Same thing, we knew going in it would be a goofy horror movie about vampires. Fun watch if you know what to expect. A eurotrash vampire, vampire hunters, babes, blood cool cars. Something you can have on while you catch up on magazine reading.

Mallrats and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back- I really love Kevin Smith's movies. I think it's refreshing he doesn't feel the need to be politically correct and just lets loose. Also the DVD's have behind the scene stuff that just rock. Comedy made for the average person. Mallrats is a straight romantic comedy with some great insights on our culture. And Strike Back is a grand adventure about tow guys going to Hollywood to stop a movie about them from being made. Cameos aplenty, some dirty humor, an orangutan, and moped. Plus Carrie Fischer plays a nun..... I loved them. Plus if you have seen his previous movies, there are a lot of little nods to them.

Pearl Harbor- Hollywood fluff at it's peak. About twenty minutes of interesting movie, the rest all a made up love triangle that gets boring right quick. I should have waited for it to be on cable. Mad Max - Special Edition - It was really nice to watch this without the dubbed American voices on it. And the special features are great. Still a wonderful movie about a man being pushed over the edge in the bleak future.

The Score - A great movie on a few levels. It was wonderful to see DeNiro with Brand and the newcomer Ed Norton. Plus, as caper movies go , this was fun. A good plot, it moves fast enough, but not like the extended MTV videos that some movies are.

The Way of The Gun - Wow. This movie was recommended to us a few times, by various authors at signings and a few friends with similar tastes in movies. They were right. It's a great movie about two loser bad guys who know they will always be criminals. They decide to kidnap a woman, and of course it turns out to be a mistake. She has mob ties and a whole lot of bad guys come after them. It's fast, it's violent and completely entertaining.

Television:

The Olympics: Well what can I say, NBC spent to much time on their made in advance segments and not enough time on actual events. But is anyone surprised???

CSI - This show is engrossing. Though unrealistic at times, it delivers an hour of entertainment every time.

ER - stopped watching. This used to be a great show, about an emergency room. Now it's Days of Our Lives for the masses. Too bad.

Ground Force - a BBC show that has a home owner sending their other half away for two days, and then the Ground Force team come in and transforms their backyard in 48 hours. Good fun, and they always do a wonderful job. Un like.....

Trading Spaces & Changing Rooms - The American version and the British original. Always entertaining, but usually because we yell at the TV. Are these designers on drugs???? On TS, Hildy actually glued hay/straw to a wall. And the homeowners let her!! It's actually to the point that we watch to see just what these homeowners let them get a way with. I really like the ones when a pair of home owners rebel against the designer and tell them no. Designers pout and can't understand why people won't blindly follow their ideas.

Ruth and I have been going to a lot of signings lately. Some very great authors have come through Milwaukee and we've been lucky enough to go to Mystery One Books and see them. Loren Estleman and his wife Deborah Morgan were great fun. As was SJ Rozan, and Nevada Barr. Chuck Logan was just here and he is definitely an interesting guy. And Sparkle Hayter was, as usual, a lot of fun. She made the group of customers laugh, and she even went out to dinner with us all. Coming up are Jeffery Deaver, Steve Thayer, George Pelecanos, Dana Stabenow and more. I do love signings. It's nice to meet the people who write the words that entertain me so much.

The What the hell? department -

A woman in Texas was involved in a hit and run. She hit a man while driving under the influence, and rather than stop, she drove the distance home with him stuck in the windshield. She then pulled into the garage, and left him there for two days till he died. Is this a woman society will miss???

A crematorium in Georgia stacked bodies up out back instead of performing the cremations. This sure lends credibility to Sean Doolittle's book Dirt!!

Pig farm in Canada found to contain a large amount of human remains.... nice to know the weird and messed up people aren't all in the States!!

Books -

I picked up some of the George Chesbro books from the New Apache Press. They look great!! Trade paperbacks, and the whole of his catalog is available. Plus the new book he wrote called The Keeper. No reason to give for missing out on this great writer!!!

Richard Barre is going to have a new book out this summer!!! Another Wil Hardesty book from http://www.caprapress.com/barre/ This is such great news. Now if a lot of people will buy this, we can look forward to more!

Stuart Kaminsky has a new Toby Peters book coming this summer. I love this series. Real people interacting with fiction. Fun stuff.

And next month, the new Macklin book from Loren Estleman!! I should have a review up soon.

A little off the subject, there is a wonderful book out celebrating the 75th anniversary of Winnie The Pooh. It's called Three Cheers for Pooh, and is from Dutton books. ISBN #0-525-46796-3. It's a wonderful coffee table book with lots of pictures and history.
