I Was A Sinner....
Till I saw the Reverend Horton Heat. I had impure thoughts. I had bad and evil thoughts. I had unkind thoughts. But now I am cleansed. I am saved, purified by the sound of music. Saved by the guitar of Reverend Horton Heat. Testify!!! I was driving and became angry. I wanted to cause harm to a man driving a green SUV and talking on the phone at the same time. Ahhh... who am kidding, I wanted to kick his ass. I wanted to do unnatural things to him with that stupid phone. But after hearing Big Red Rocket of Love performed live I feel much better. Hearing the song Martini Time sung loud and with the audience screaming the chorus made me feel good. It made me forget the cold. Basically it was a really good night. We found parking damn close to the venue (Shank Hall), and had dinner at my sister’s house only two blocks away. We arrived about fifteen minutes early and settled in. The opening act was The Unknown Hinson. A kind of country/rockabilly dude who could really play guitar. Very fun lyrics too. He was loud and fast. After a short break the lights dimmed and we saw the band move onto stage in the dark. The lights burst on as all three men on stage started playing. A stand up bass painted fire engine red played by Nature Boy Jimbo, and Steve on the drums. And of course The Reverend Horton Heat on guitar and vocals. The music has a loud fast rockabilly feel to it. Some of has almost a jazzy kind of beatnik feeling to it. It’s actually hard to describe it perfectly. He actually calls it psychobilly. He sings about cars and driving fast. He sings about ex-girlfriends who still owe him money, and about bales of cocaine falling from the sky on a farmers field. The song Martini Time and Baby I’m Drunk are probably my favorites. The crowd screamed and sang along. It was really wild to be so caught up in the show that I forgot where I was. I looked around and noticed a whole sea of people rolling and rocking their heads like rough water. And for such a large crowd people were really well behaved. There were college students and greasers, bikers and cowboys. A real mix of humanity. I have to say, seeing live music makes life a little better. Check out the website for your self.
