Billingham book release party
for Lazy Bones
Crime In Store
July 3rd, 2003
It was a fabulous, fabulous launch, and here's my side of the story.
I got there fairly early, after deciding it would be a fabulous idea to walk
from my residence to CiS in my stiletto ankle boots after not having worn them
in ages and becoming accustomed to running shoes. Ow! I arrive, say hello to
Geoffrey and head downstairs to greet the crew (Thalia, David, Alex). Thal
directs me to where the chocolate and flowers are. Near the flowers were framed
pictures of Marcus. He looked so full of life and happy in them, and a fitting
memorial.
I finally met Rik (sorry I didn't get to talk to you much, it was crazy) and
soon Mitchy joined us downstairs, as the crowd filled up....and up....and up. I
think I commented to Mitchy at one point if it was always this crowded, and she
nodded, but I don't believe it.
Those making the scene: Ali (with his camera, of course, snapping pictures where
he could), Martyn Waites (whose Vox n' Roll has been rescheduled for the 17th,
blast it I'll be in Harrogate already for that, ah well), Fidelis Morgan looking
her usual divine self although she couldn't stay very long. Hell I'm glad I just
got a chance to say hello in the mob. Michael Marshall Smith was there with his
wife, but never got to be formally introduced b/c he left just before Ali was to
do the honors. John Harvey was there with his adorable daughter Molly, who was
really excited about the birthday cake, though I don't know if she ever got any
to eat (nor did I. Nor did most people. Great cake though!). Ayo was there, and
it's always wonderful to see her. Met her last week for the first time and I
feel like I've known her for ages. She's that kind of lady.
Who else...Barbara Nadel, who is sharp and hilarious and I loved talking to her.
She was great. Simon Kernick, who I finally got to meet, and he is truly a top
bloke, still kind of semi-amazed to be where he is and is looking forward to
Bouchercon. He really ought to post to RAM. Hell, so should everyone who
isn't...
Also finally met Luci, albeit briefly. Very cool to do so.
Mark's speech was truly amazing. He managed to say exactly the right thing at
the right time, strike just the perfect chord. Everybody, espec Thalia really
teared up over it.
The party went on for some time, and I think I sampled nearly every veggie hor
d'oeuvre at least 4 times. And still managed to have dinner, going over next
door to sit down and hang out with Ali, Simon, David, Liz & Myles (friends
of Thalia's), and David's friend Tom, mostly eating pizza and shooting the shit.
It was most definitely a memorable evening. And Crimescene is next week....can't
wait.
