Peter
Robinson
Signing at Mystery One Bookshop
Milwaukee Wisconsin
Feb 28th, 2003
Mr.
Robinson arrived early for his signing event on this part of the tour for Close
To Home, his latest book. ( The book is called The Summer That Never Was outside
the US). The book is a follow up to 2001’s Aftermath. There is a review for it
elsewhere on this site by my wife Ruth. There was a nice crowd for the signing
and Peter talked for a while about the books and writing. The conversation
eventually drifted towards why football is such a great sport to watch on
television. We’ve decided it is because you can read or nap during it and not
miss anything. He talked a bit about the possibility of Inspector Banks being on
television. We also discussed what books we’ve been reading and are planning
on reading. Peter is reading Ken Bruen’s The Guards and enjoying it. He picked
up a copy of The White
Trilogy by Bruen to read on the road.
After all the books were signed we went to a local Italian restaurant for
dinner. Discussion of books continued and drifted towards movies and television
and what it’s like touring and what it entails. Peter told us about trying to
explain to customs officers why he’s touring to promote a book, but not
actually getting paid to do it. We discovered that the main reason he travels
with a laptop is to watch dvd’s in his hotel rooms. Right now he is enjoying
episodes of the Outer Limits.
It was a very nice evening and Mr. Robinson is a very nice man, and I would urge
people to try to get to one of his signings. It’s worth the trip just to hear
his calm and almost soothing voice!
