The rec.arts.mystery newsgroup is rather a strange place, and can take getting used to if you are not prepared.  The following is NOT an official anything.  It is put together from various suggestions by members of the newsgroup.  They can be cutting, witty, intelligent, sympathetic, and just plain zany.  Join us by all means - but you might want to "lurk" [read but not post] for a few days until you get the 'flavor' of the group.  We've had our share of trolls and spammers.  They are not tolerated gently.

RAM FAQUE FAQ

1. What do people talk about here?

well, anything we want to, mostly. A lot of talk about mystery novels. We talk about mystery conventions. We talk about pet peeves, editors, publishers, authors, and readers of mysteries. We've even been known to get off-topic a time or two.

2. Who are RAM's favorite authors?

Some like cozies, some like hard-boiled, some like popular stuff...there's a good diversity of readers and mysteries represented here. Few authors are off-limits. (see item #7)

3. Can I post reviews of books I've read?

Sure. Mostly they get skipped over, I think, hard to tell. I have so many books on my TBR pile that it's hard to keep up with new authors based on someone who I don't even know's review.

4. Isn't that kind of an awkward sentence you just wrote there?

Yeah. I'm a reader, not a writer. Sue me. Or publish me. <shrug>

5. There is a test to be able to post here. Complete the following sentences:

a) "Coffin's Got the ____________ Inside"

b) "I will not post off topic. I will not post off topic. I will not post off topic. I will not __________________."

c) "I am not now, nor have I ever been a __________________."

d) "Andrew Vachss? Never ____________ him."

6. The song that haunts you most is:

a) "Ooompah Loompah"

b) "It's a small world after all"

c) "The wheels on the bus go round and round"

d) "99 bottles of beer on the wall"

7. Can I talk about Patricia Cornwells' books?

er, well....if you WANT to...but be prepared to be MUNGERized.

8. To be WHAT?

MUNGERized.

9. Ok, jerkface, what's that?

<shudder> you don't want to know. really you don't. There could be kids reading this!!

10. Do any famous authors ever come by here?

No. never. not at all. Those people you see whose name you recognize? well, they're really all just the same 14-year-old pimply faced boy in Akron, Ohio, who's learned to change his AOL name thirty times. Don't get your hopes up.

11. What's with this whole *sluice* thing?

C'mon, you know you've noticed it in books you've read. Have you ever said it? heard it? can you even spell it without cheating? So why is it in so many damn books? Can you answer me that, huh???

12. Anything else I need to know?

Nope, I think I have avoided doing major productive tasks long enough for now. Time to face the household chores....but first let me put my new books on my TBR sta..........

-----------------------------> ALSO:

Most posts should be about mysteries or be funny.

If not about mysteries or funny, they should be about something else.

Correct spelling is optional, but you'd better not get a birthday wrong and be prepared to tolerate jibes about typos that turn into straight-lines.

Blatant promotion of the group's authors is always welcome, even if libelous.

All answers should be at both the top and the bottom of the quoted text, to displease everyone.

References to Patricia Cornwell should always be prefaced with a GAG ALERT, for those prone to nausea.

It's OK to admit you read cozies, but it's wise to say you also like books with helicopters or be prepared to suffer the consequences.

If a topic appears to make no sense whatsoever, it is probably a joke from within the last few months.  Feel free to ask, but keep in mind that replies may vary.

AND:

RAM= Rec.arts.mystery
RAMmer= person who frequently reads and or posts to RAM. A person who gets caught up in the lives of others on the group while sharing a common love of the mystery genre.  Other symptoms may include laughing out loud while at your computer, giving a second look when you see peeps in the store, noticing the word sluice in books when you never did before.
