Maxi Poole is the darling of Channel Six, United Global Network's Los Angeles affiliate, and anchorwoman of their award-winning 6 O'clock News. She is understandably surprised and upset when her boss, Pete Capra, busts her back to the graveyard shift with no explanation whatsoever. Since this sort of move usually precedes a reporter being fired or 'forced' to quit, Maxi is bound and determined to find out what prompted Pete's decision. In the meantime, Maxi's world turns upside down, literally.
Maxi is convinced that her career is over but she sees a silver lining when she is befriended by Tom McCartney, a news 'stringer' who rules the nighttime. He shows her the ropes, and at Pete Capra's behest, he also has her back.
And as if the graveyard shift and the reason she is on it aren't enough to keep Maxi preoccupied, she finds herself enlisted by a wealthy neighbor's housekeeper to help her find her missing 2-year- old son. Confusing things even further, the housekeeper's employer then turns up dead.
Kelly Lange and her characters move between plot and subplots with ease. The reader is sure to encounter at least one jaw-dropping twist, and I do mean that in the literal sense. I was caught completely off guard, and that doesn't happen very often. Graveyard Shift is definitely a page-turner, and I am bound and determined to go back and read the first books in this fascinating series!
