iUniverse, 2002, 270 pps.
Blair Emerson has finally come to terms with the past and is leading a successful life in Austin, Texas. From the time she was a child Blair was interested in her father’s business as owner and director of Emerson Funeral Home. Blair attended school to become a funeral director and is now in charge of the Emerson Funeral Home. She has made a new life for herself with her business occupying most of her time. When she goes home at night she is met by Celtic her Boston terrier. Close friends help occupy her days.
Eleven years ago Blair was happily married to Myles and raising her daughter Brandi, then two years old. Suddenly Brandi was kidnapped from their back yard and Blair’s world turned upside down. She devoted all of her time to following up clues and leads but all were dead ends. Myles found happiness with another woman and they divorced.
Now that life has finally settled into a routine Blair receives a call giving her hope that Brandi might be returned to her. Afraid to confide in her friend Blair sets out to answer the kidnapper’s demands but another crime gets in her way.
Linda Amey has written a novel of suspense and at the same time been able to show you a little of the life of a funeral director and the challenges they face. Her every day duties made me look on the profession in a very different way. I look forward to reading her next book.
