Series: Blair Emerson # 1

Blair Emerson has finally achieved happiness in her life after a devastating series of losses. She has inherited her father's funeral business, and finds satisfaction and contentment in her ability to serve families suffering from a relative's death.

Her hard-won equilibrium is destroyed by a call from a man claiming to have kidnapped her daughter eleven years earlier - and to be willing to return the girl. For a price, of course. Overwhelmed by hope and fear, she is unaware at first of the mysterious disappearance of another girl.

Although some aspects of the plot are fairly predictable - I guessed the solution to one mystery quite early - others are more suspenseful. The strengths of this book lie in the characterizations. Blair has, as a result of her personal experiences and her profession, knowledge of how terrible events traumatize people - and how people endure, survive, and build a new life on the ruins of the old. She rejects easy answers and magical thinking without eliminating faith.

Blair is not the only well-developed character. April is a bright, interesting and yet troubled girl, described without condescension or stereotyping. Even Lenny, as unsympathetic as he is, is no cardboard cutout of a man.

I enjoyed this book, and look forward to the others in the series.
