Although I was a bit disappointed to go back in time once again as I am looking forward to finding out what happens next in the Skolian Empire, I was surprisingly pleased with this book. As always, the writing style is clear and engaging, and I devoured this book in about one day.
The story is set primarily on Lyshriol, home to Eldrinson Valdoria, the current patriarch of the Ruby Dynasty. We also get a chance to follow Soz to Military Academy, the beginning of the end of childhood for her and the rest of the children in the Valdioria family. For the first time, we get a chance to see them all together, and to understand why they have such a close bond earlier books.
Although Asaro can't seem to get away from a couple of her most typical plot lines, the blatant sexuality of most of her books is absent, a welcome change in a story that surrounds the young Ruby Psions just beginning to come of age.
