Storm Kayama is an attorney with a newly established practice in Honolulu. As is the case with many island residents, she has a deep respect for many of the legends and traditions of historical Hawaii as well as an enthusiast's interest in surfing competition. When the son of a new client invites her to watch him compete, Storm travels to Oahu's north shore to enjoy the spectacle of the enormous winter waves rolling in, and cheer for the participants in one of the many surfing competitions in that area.
A murderer is at work in the area - the bodies of two young men have been found, and certain characteristics of traditional Hawaiian combat are left behind for investigators. One of the dead men is Storm's cousin and as more details unfold, Storm realizes that her new client is deeply involved as well.
While posters and travelogues present a Hawaii which is always sunny, with gentle waves rolling along the beach under clear blue skies, Atkinson presents another reality. Powerful surf is unforgiving of the unprepared or unwary. Nighttime driving along coastal roads can be precarious as the tide can threaten to wash over the pavement in the darkness. Lava caves can provide hiding places but can become death traps as the tide rolls in to consume all the breathable air.
Atkinson lives in the islands, and in her hands THE GREEN ROOM is a new type of armchair travel book. Those who think a week's sojourn on Maui or Wakiki provides all there is to know about Hawaii should think again!
