Murder in Amsterdam includes two novellas, Dekok and the Sunday Strangler and Dekok and the Corpse on Christmas Eve. Baantjer is a prolific and popular Dutch author.
The first story follows the deaths of prostitutes. In the second, Dekok resorts to a bit of trickery to catch a murderer.
Inspector Dekok is an older detective, a bit tired but still capable of outthinking the bad guy. These mysteries give a good sense of Amsterdam and of the surrounding countryside. A bit slow moving but with a rich sense of the psychological depths that drive us all. Observant, careful, compassionate and clever describe the Inspector as he travels the streets of his city.
