In Ghosts, Sam is again married, to a woman who is terminally ill. As her story plays out, Geordie and Marie are assigned to follow an insurance investigation, which branches off into other crimes and eerily into Sam's dying wife's past. The climax comes with knives, fire and harrowing escapes which leave the investigators surviving, thank goodness, for the next book.

There is a complexity in Baker's books that you don't find in the average crime novel. John Baker writes for grownups, with an uncanny portrayal of life as it is, not as we might like it to be.
