Class/Genre: Mystery
Web London the FBI’s point man on the elite Hostage Rescue Team watches his team go down in an ambush leaving him the sole survivor. Racked with survivor’s guilt, suspected of setting his team up, he sets out on a mission to revenge his team. Clearing his reputation along the way is secondary. The trail twists and turns around the D.C. drug underground, in a white supremacist group, a FBI approved psychiatrists office and within the FBI itself.
Before he finds his revenge he must visit the dark places in his past with the help of his psychiatrist. Along the way his FBI mentor, the undercover operative who set up the raid, the local drug lord who is the prime suspect help him fill in the pieces of the puzzle. The story ends in the Virginia horse country where the parents of the hostage he lost have come to mourn. The pieces all come together with a twist of revenge from his past.
The author sets this thriller in high gear and never lets up. He weaves a twisted series of bad guys into a single plot of revenge. This is a shooter’s book with self described Alpha Males with violent pasts, well armed, all looking to survive and retire in one piece alive. At the same time it is a psychological thriller as the protagonist must come to terms with his own childhood, the 10 year old hostage he lost and the 10 year street kid he saved only to have him snatched by the bad guys. The techno thriller reader will be given a healthy dose of hot cars, guns, tactics and firefights.
Last man standing is a fun read for those who want a thriller that doesn’t require a lot of deep thinking; but in the end it’s like a Chinese take out, good while you’re enjoying it, then feeling empty two hours later.
