Park Ranger Anna Pigeon has finally applied for, and been granted a promotion. Somewhat to her dismay, this means leaving her beloved Southwest and becoming the District Ranger on the Natchez Trace in Mississippi. Bad enough to be the new kid on the block, but to do it in the South where she is not likely to be welcome as a female ranger is not Anna's idea of bliss.

Unfortunately, Anna's concerns are based in reality, and it doesn't help when she finds the body of a young female, with a noose around her neck and a white sheet over her head. Between the attitudes of the locals, her own subordinates, and Anna's own doubts, along with her growing feelings for a local Sheriff who also happens to be an Episcopal priest, Anna truly has her hands full.

Nevada Barr has done it to me again. I can't say enough good things about her writing. If she is writing about the Southwest, you sweat right along with Anna. When she wrote about Lake Superior, I needed a sweater. When she wrote about the Carlsbad Caverns, I shook. Now, with DEEP SOUTH, the Nanchez Trace and all of the heat, mugginess, bugs and attitudes come to life. It's winter, here, but I could feel the oppression from the hot, muggy air and the swarms of bugs. James Lee Burke has nothing on Nevada Barr. She has come up with another true winner!
