A body found in a cave in southern Appalachia brings Body Farm anthropologist Dr. Bill Brockton to the site. As the authorities try to determine who died and when, Brockton begins to believe some people in rural backwoods Cooke County would prefer not to have this puzzle solved. Trying to sort good guys from bad becomes as important as solving the forensic puzzle.

Jefferson Bass is actually two writers, the founder of the Body Farm teamed with a journalist. This story gives the reader a crash course in forensics, possibly more than we need to know and sometimes needlessly graphic. A singular exploration of southern Appalachian life, of good and evil, of the directions life can take us. Memorable characters, frightening moments and a surprising, harrowing ending will have you wanting more of this team.
