When published author, John Heppel, settles in the quaint village of Lochdubh and starts up a series of writing classes, the locals (all with stars in their eyes) sign up in droves. But instead of receiving encouragement and being told of their enviable writing talents, their hopes and dreams are dashed and battered by the pompous little man. Loveable Constable Hamish Macbeth hopes to forestall disaster by having a chat with the writer and insisting he apologize to the villagers for his boorish behavior and return their money. When Hamish visits Heppel at home, he discovers him dead of an apparent suicide but quickly deduces that it has been staged. With his superiors often standing in his way, Hamish sets out to prove his beloved villagers innocent while searching for the guilty party.

There are plenty of diversions, including the return of Hamish’s old girlfriend, Elspeth Grant, who manages definitely to stir things up. All in all, Death of a Bore is a very enjoyable and quick read!
