In a small town in Kentucky, Kate Russell is trying to forget a horrible past. Shortly after her move to Carystown a small girl disappears. Two years later, the child appears to Kate and shows her where her body is buried. Is it a dream, a ghost? Kate finally tells the sheriff knowing that if she is believed, she will become a suspect.

The characters in thus story are memorable, a mix of good and bad but most hiding dark secrets, The author does a good job of teasing the reader into an expanding mood of mystery. By the time this intelligent and complex book ends the destruction has spread across a number of families. In the end several people are dead, others suffering jail or loss, yet justice has not really been done.
