Renowned for her dog training symposiums, Samantha Lewis hires private investigator Rachel Alexander, a former canine instructor, to help keep the peace among the acrimonious attendees expected to come to her latest seminar. Not expecting major trouble, Rachel and her dog Dashiel look forward to a relaxing stay at the convention's locale, the Ritz, a fancy hotel that overlooks Central Park West. To hide her true assignment from the participants, Rachel will provide a presentation at the seminar.

However, from the start, ugly rivalries surface until the acrid dueling turn deadly when two allegedly accidental deaths occur. The convention continues with heated debates and arguments seemingly springing up all over Manhattan centering on appropriate training techniques. Meanwhile, Rachel begins an investigation of the happenings in an effort to learn who wants to become top dog at any cost before someone else is murdered.

In her third canine caper (see THIS DOG FOR HIRE and THE DOG WHO KNEW TOO MUCH), award winning Carol Lea Benjamin scribes a crisp, wonderful who-done-it starring several intriguing characters. Rachel and Dashiel are a charming duo, but it is the symposium attendees who make A HELL OF A DOG, a hell of a book that will delight fans of canine mysteries.
