The Deal Master is the story of a serial killer, set in New York City, who kills his victims in a most gruesome fashion. However, it is also the story of Detective William Gillette, who is put in charge of the task force attempting to stop the murders.
Detective Gillette has a lot to live up to as his father was a New York City detective who pretty much single handedly brought down a huge mafia leader in his career. Therefore great things are expected of him also.
Detective Gillette has his own personal problems. He and his wife have drifted apart, he becomes attracted to the profiler assigned to the task force and feels as if he is failing as the leader of the task force as the killer is leaving no evidence or pattern as to his next victim.
There is a gag order on the task force. They are to discuss the details of the crimes with no one (husband, wife, girlfriend, etc.). Then out of the blue, his wife tells him about Jonathon Hamlin, a fairly new volunteer in the mission his wife works at in a seedy part of town. She tells him a story of a man who had been coming to the mission for months whose whole existence was to find his daughter. Low and behold, Jonathon tells him she is dead and knows details that have not been released.
Jonathon Hamlin is a very, very strange man. He won't exchange information or do anything without first making a deal. Detective Gillette is very suspicious of him however he cannot do anything to him as he may have learned his facts from a leak in the task force and seems to have quite a few friends in very high positions politically and otherwise.
This was an interesting book however it seemed to have more focus on Detective Gillette's love life than on the serial killer. I also did not particularly care for the ending. But that is just my opinion. I am sure others will enjoy it and it was quite a quick read.
