I want to start this by saying that this does not feel like a first book. In fact, I became so comfortable with the writing style and the character that it feels like I’ve read other books by Black. And though this is the first, I hope it’s not the last.

Ron Shade is a former Chicago Police Officer, he left the force and became a Private Investigator. The book opens with Ron clearing out his office. And though it seems strange to open with a PI who is leaving the business, we quickly discover he is simply eliminating overhead that is unneeded. While Ron packs up the last boxes, a freind comes in with a potential client. Over coffee Ron is convinced to take the case, a simple missing person case. Well, not quite simple. The man who is missing is an illegal alien. The story progresses from here with a smooth building of speed, not unlike the Z-28 that Shade drives.

Michael Black has a feel for the city and it’s streets that is uncanny. The imagery he creates is powerful and real. I can’t wait for the next book. Black is on my buy list from here on out.
