John and Karen Dalton have purchased the Abbadon Inn, an old Victorian house in Cape May, New Jersey to attempt to restore it to its former glory and run it as a bed and breakfast. John comes from a very wealthy family with an extremely domineering father, who wants to control the lives of his three children.
They have used money they received from an inheritance from John’s mother who recently died after a long separation from their father. This is one of several ventures John has attempted. His previous attempts have always been thwarted by his father and he would be forced to return to the family business in shame once again.
John becomes obsessed with restoring the Abbadon and is once again pulling away from his wife. Karen finds a stash of love letters written 30 years ago by a former tenant of the Abbadon. The letters are written by Jack Cooney a long-dead mobster, whose boss had bought the Abbadon years ago to turn it into a gambling resort.
Soon John and Karen have their hands full as strange events start happening, ghosts appearing, individuals disappearing and the family descending on them from New York to attempt to sabotage their new dream.
This book was okay as a short read but basically just another haunted house story with somewhat of a twist. Would only recommend if one wanted something short and not too in depth.
