Series: Matthew Scudder # 15

In this, the 15th Matt Scudder book, we get a look inside of Scudder’s head as he speculates the murder committed, in the beginning of the book. This is a great first chapter and a wonderful way to start a book. We are brought up to date on Matt and
the others in the series we care about, and it doesn’t feel like re-hashing, it’s fresh.

The rest of the book progresses nicely from there. I have to say it doesn’t surpass my personal favorite of the Scudder books, A Dance Among The Tombstones, but it’s still a great book. The victims were killed after a concert and dinner that Matt and Elaine were also at. They were killed after they returned home. A few days later the killers are found dead. One killed by his partner, who then shot himself. But, Scudder being who he is, can’t let go. These events happen early enough that I’m not giving anything away. The rest of the book just cruised along at a great pace and made me wish I could read faster to see what happened, and slower at the same time so I could savor it. Block is on his game in this book. His story telling is just so natural that it feels like a freind relating a tale in person. And his feel for New York City is unsurpassed. I love this series, and this book is a wonderful chapter in it. Read it, you won’t be disappointed.
