Lawrence Block
Class/Genre: Mystery
Series: Bernie Rhodenbarr # 11
Block is the best writer around when it comes to portraying a graceful natural flow of conversation between his characters, and I always feel like I have entered a long familiar, comfortable room or reached into the closet for a favorite shirt when I pick up one of his books.
The "Burglar" series features the lighter, more humorous side of Block, in contrast to the Matt Scudder or Hitman series. In this entry, title character Bernie Rhodenbarr agrees as a favor to remove some ill gotten cash from the safe in a luxurious home near Manhattan. In part as preparation for the planned burglary, and in part to satisfy a deep seated urge, Bernie gos "on the prowl" and ends up on security cameras in the same neighborhood where two murders have resulted from a home break in. Although Bernie is innocent of the murders and the accompanying burglary, he is nevertheless arrested. His arrest brings him to the attention of the murderous crew, who apparently did not find what they were looking for in the home they invaded.
>From there the reader follows Bernie and other continuing characters as they sort out what is going on, and uncover some long buried history of Soviet outrages in Latvia. Along the way, Bernie gains a new lady in his life, helps her gain revenge on the perpetrator of a date rape incident, and eventually wraps everything up in the style of classic suspense fiction when all the suspects and involved persons are called together to meet in a luxurious drawing room.
A worthy entry in the continuing "Burglar" series!
