Hollywood PI Brian Kane has been hired by Charlotte Randolph to follow her husband - famous actor Lester Randolph - who she suspects of having an affair. Or several. And boy, is he ever. However, when Kane pays a visit to Charlotte Randolph to deliver his report he discovers that the woman who has hired his is NOT Charlotte Randolph, but a mystery woman who looks very like her. Why has the fake Mrs Randolph paid good money to Kane to have him follow another woman’s husband? Why does one of Randolph’s starlet companions end up dead shortly after? And how can Kane continue to have such an enormous amount of sex without collapsing from nervous exhaustion?! A rollicking good read with thrills, an interesting protagonist and an authentic post WWII Hollywood feel (the sleazy, casting couch side rather than the glamourous public face). I loved all the name dropping of moguls and movie stars of the era.
