Rick Dover is a LAPD homicide detective whose partner Stretch has just died in a car crash. Dover is not satisfied with the verdict of accident. There is puzzling evidence at the crash site and some perplexing computer clues regarding an elusive group said to be out of control.

The story involves a wide ranging conspiracy among higher-ups in government including police, FBI and others. This ambitious plot was interesting despite some weak spots but the feeble ending was a letdown. This book requires a large dose of suspension of disbelief.

Bouton occasionally shows flashes of a fine writing style and sly humor. I hope we might find better books to come by this writer.
