Game warden Joe Pickett returns, this time investigating a brutal series of animal mutilations. Pickett has discovered a dead moose, and within a few days a cattle rancher reports several mutilated cattle. The ante is upped abruptly when two men are found dead, with their bodies bearing similar marks of ritual mutilation.

Although Pickett is not directly responsible for investigating the deaths of the two men, he begins to follow his own intuition and discover connections to the fluctuating values of Wyoming real estate, and the personal and business affairs of a well know local businessman.

One of the enjoyable features of Box's series featuring Joe Pickett is his stable, supportive marriage and family life. In this entry, the business acumen and intelligence of MaryBeth Pickett is an important part of the story.
