Three young itinerant crooks pull up to a liquor store in a wooded area of Northern California. The youngest and most inexperienced of the trio goes into the store to rob the till, and meets up with an unexpectedly violent response from the owners. He stumbles back to the car, without cash and bleeding profusely. Searching for a destination where they can find help without a lot of pesky questions, the group drives up to a cabin in the woods.

The wife of the couple who live there is a nurse, which is good news - the wounded kid is patched up expertly. The husband is a retired bank robber - better news. The three plan to entice the husband into robbing for them while his wife is held hostage to the successful haul of money.

Unfortunately for them, the husband is smarter than the three of them put together and the wife is not far behind. What follows is a very funny series of events and a very satisfying read.
