Poppy Z. Brite is well known as a horror author. Heaven knows she’s hard-boiled. She did after all write Courtney Love’s authorized biography.
LIQUOR is Ms. Brite’s look at the New Orlean’s Restaurant scene. This book is a satisfying read. Our two protagonists Rickey and G -Man are line cooks at a successful restaurant fired along with the rest of the crew for drinking in the kitchen. While waiting for new employment they come up with a concept for a new restaurant. Liquor. That’s right all food will be laced with the city’s favorite pass time, served with flair, and presented to please the palate. Soon their dream is within reach. But nothing comes easy in the Big Easy. Malicious rumors fly, magnanimous benefactors may have ulterior motives, and there’s the coke head ex-boss with an out of control vendetta.
Nothing says New Orleans like the food and nobody has written this part of the city better than Ms. Brite in this book. She knows the kitchen. She knows the food, and she brings her reader along for a ride that packs more flavor than calories.
