Michael Tanner and wife Mary Whitney are sailing with friends when Mary finds an interesting object while diving in Lake Superior. The historic brass seems to have come from the wreck of a vessel thought to have been sunk at another location. Interest piqued, they research the history of the ship. This lands them in the middle of a possible scandal that could hurt two prominent families.

One of Brookins strengths is his knowledge of sailing and diving. He keeps the story moving not only across the lake, but from the Twin Cities to Duluth and Chicago. There is the requisite rough-and- tumble scene to add excitement as Tanner and Mary wrap up the solution before returning to their Seattle home.
