Dorothy Gale Robinson is the daughter of hippie parents who like old movies. However, when her father dies suddenly, she finds her world turned upside down. Her mother joins a cult and since her brother is too busy to help, she seeks help from her boyfriend and a cult-buster, venturing from Florida to Banff in search of her mother.
This is a short, but pleasant novel written in an easy to read and chatty style. Mueller Bryson treats the reader as thought they are someone she knows and with whom she is having a casual conversation. The light tone and humour add to this effect. Since it is such a short story, there is no real detailed plot or deep characters, but they are unnecessary, since the author has not written a complicated story, but a simple tale.
The link to 'The Wizard of Oz' is made clear throughout the story, as Mueller Bryson puts in quotes at the beginning of each chapter, as well as the obvious parallelism between the death of Dorothy's father in this story, and Dorothy ending up in Oz in 'The Wizard of Oz'. Both of their worlds become very different, but they both have happy endings.
Overall, there is nothing taxing about 'Hey Dorothy, You're Not In Kansas Anymore'. It is an uncomplicated story that will appeal to fans of 'The Wizard of Oz' and to anyone who suffers as bizarre a life as the eponymous Dorothy does.
