Series: Samantha Kincaid # 2
Samantha Kincaid is an assistant district attorney in Portland, Oregon, newly assigned to the Major Crimes unit.
An administrative judge has disappeared, her family and friends bewildered by the circumstances of her departure. Within a few days, a passer by finds her dog running free with his lead still attached to his collar, nearby is one abandoned shoe. Because of the woman's position as a city employee, Kincaid is called upon to work with the police as they investigate.
In fairly short order, a disgruntled applicant in the missing woman's administrative courtroom is identified, and incriminating evidence found in his home. He is charged with her murder and a court appointed attorney assigned to the case. The defense attorney begins to sort out the facts and he suspects a frame up. The police investigation is officially over, but he persuades Kincaid to provide discreet assistance in checking on facts which don't quite mesh together well.
Burke has a nice protagonist in Kincaid, and I'm enjoying the first two entries in a proposed continuing series.
