“12.19 a.m. A Mercedes leaves the Ritz Hotel. 12.25 a.m. A car loses control in a Paris underpass. 3.57 a.m. Three people are pronounced dead. 3.58 a.m. Samuel Carver realizes he’s been set up ...”

This reviewer needed no further hints to understand “The Accident Man” is a fictional exploration of why Princess Diana died in August, 1997. Samuel Carver, the man just at the edge of the accident, realizes his small part covers up a larger skein of espionage’s dark double-dealing. Together with the Russian photographer on the back of the motorcycle that spurred the former Royal’s reckless speeding through the tunnel, Carver pulls at the string connected to his disappearing paycheck to the Russian Mafia and upper-echelon British business players.

Although author Cain cannot know if the Princess’s death was an accident or murder, he makes a plausible case for a conspiracy to silence the world’s most influential woman, for surprising reasons, other than because of her partners in death.
