Classification: Adult fiction (Thriller)
The Stollenberg Convoy is allegedly treasure from the Third Reich that mysteriously disappeared. Sailor Michael Kyle learns about it from his obsessed flat-mate Dr David McDonald. When McDonald suddenly dies in strange circumstances, Kyle does not believe the official explanation and thinks that there is some link with the Stollenberg myth. He sets out to investigate, finding his own life in danger as well.
Although his novels are short, Callison has found the art of being able to pack in as much detail as possible. The story of the Stollenberg myth is a very interesting one, whether it is fact or fiction. The actual adventures of Kyle are exciting and action-packed as well, along with many twists and turns to make the novel even more gripping.
Even though you have to suspend your disbelief regarding the amount of deaths that go on, the novel is still very good. It is also humorous - some of Kyle's wry comments or just general befuddlement had me laughing out loud. Also, although Callison includes a sea voyage towards the end of the novel, the majority of it is not set at sea, which may make it appeal to more people. If you have any interest in treasure hunting and suchlike, this novel ought to be one that you think about.
