Series: Inspector Montalbano # 2

Inspector Montalbano has, again, some extremely delicate and difficult Sicilian affairs to sort out. In a way, this book is structured in two parts. It begins with Montalbano dealing with that most infamous of Sicilian groups, the Mafia. Montalbano is 'someone who understands things'; someone who knows and can manipulate the structures and relationships of his society; someone who is respected by his opponent. Therefore, he is chosen to participate in a delicate operation involving the Mafia. But understanding things does not provide control over them, or assurance that the desired outcome will be achieved.

The second part of the book, although it arises from the first, looks to the past, at a very different criminal and crime. The novel, although it is a gripping detective story, also sparks speculation about the parallels and contrasts between Sicily in the past and today, and the nature of moral and criminal behaviours. Are all criminals the same? Is there a difference between a 'man of honour' and the younger generation, his heirs, in a sense? Are modern killers really any different morally or legally from those fifty years ago?

Overall, I enjoyed this book, although I found the sudden change in focus a little disconcerting. Nevertheless, it is still above average, and well worth reading.
