Series: Inspector Montalbano # 4
Inspector Salvo Montalbano finds a young woman's body, nude and dead of suffocation. Her home contains no clothing except a discarded bathrobe, no personal effects, no handbag, no luggage. Pondering how she came to lie there near the mattress which was used to snuff out her last breath, the inspector copes with headline seeking interference from his immediate superior officer.
Bucking this interference from above, Montalbano is unable to act quickly enough to protect a disabled young man from tragedy. As is frequently the case in this entertaining series of novels, the inspector turns for help to an unlikely source - the local mafia group provides helpful video recordings which refute the "party line" presented in a series of self serving press conferences.
Eventually the chain of responsibility for the young woman's death unravels under the inspector's investigations.
I recommend that if possible, readers seek out these books in their order of orginal publication. Contintuing characters and relationships are an enjoyable backdrop to the police investigations.
