Series: Inspector Montalbano # 4
UK Edition, HB: November 2003; Viking249 pp.

In the “Voice of the Violin” Andrea Camilleri returns us to Vigata where Inspector Salvo Montalbano has not just murder to contend with, but a new Commissioner and Chief of Forensics.

With his abrupt, and usually tactless, manner, Montalbano does not make allies with the new department leaders. Nor does he seek to. He continues to work as he always has trying to solve crimes, in this case, the murder of a young, beautiful woman. But his lack of alignment with the new political powers has him taken off the case. With his internal network from many years of working in Vigata, along with his innate ability to piece together the clues, the Inspector has to use many resources before the case is totally destroyed.

Inspector Montalbano is just as bristly as ever. He is driven by his work, and when he gets focused on something, nothing gets in his way, except maybe an exceptionally well prepared meal, and that’s only a diversion. It is enjoyable to read his latest adventure as he struggles and muddles through politics and cover-up to find a murderer, as only Inspector Salvo Montalbano can.
