Greg McKenzie, retired agent from the Air Force Office of Special Investigations and ex-cop, along with his wife, Jill, leaves Nashville for the beaches of Florida when he takes on an unofficial investigation into the apparent suicide of his best friend’s son, Tim Gannon. Tim had been the design engineer for a huge condominium project called The Sand Castle which had been the site of a structural collapse that resulted in two deaths during a huge party to celebrate near completion of the project. Did Tim feel responsible for the deaths and while filled with remorse and guilt take his own life or did Tim uncover something sinister about the project which made him a victim of murder disguised as suicide? Greg must walk a fine line, trying to uncover the truth and at the same time being ever cognizant of the pain and sadness that Sam and Wilma were feeling over the loss of their son. To complicate matters, Greg elicits a complete lack of cooperation from the local authorities who are unwilling to consider any possibility other than suicide.

I missed the first book in this series, Secret of the Scroll, but it seems apparent that Greg and Jill are destined to become honest-to-goodness private investigators. They are an interesting couple with an interesting supporting cast, and I think they’ll make an excellent team in what should be a very enjoyable series. I’m looking forward to the next installment.
