Former JAG officer Joshua Thornton returns home with his five children following the death of their mother to the small town of Chester, West Virginia where he knew stability as a child. Before he and his children can really settle into their house, the children discover an old letter that suggests a murder and cover up.The letter was written 34 years earlier by Lulu and addressed to his grandparents and mailed on the very day they were killed in an auto accident. The letter reminds his parents of a body that was found in an old barn which disappeared and refers to a picture that Lulu had seen on Reverend Rawling's wall.
With the help of his formerly addicted cousin, Tad, who is now a doctor, Josh and Tad discover that Lulu had also died on the day the letter was written.. Reverened Rawlings who has a monumental following is reputed to be the major drug supplier in the area. Tad suspects that Rawlings is responsible for the death of his former girlfriend. Reverend Rawlings' granddaughter becomes hell-bent on airing her grandfather's and family's secret drug trade but she is murdered, along with the Reverend's granddaughter, before any investigation could be started by the new sheriff of Chester. Beth was employed at the local pharmacy which is owned by Jan Martin and mixes up medication which causes an investigation into missing drugs. Jan has always had the aspiration of becoming an author. Jan insists on becoming involved in the mysterious deaths much to the chargrin of Tod and Josh.
Appointed special prosecutor, Joshua Thornton becomes involved in intrique that spans generations and across the globe.
Not to be left out, Josh's children, searching for the truth, do not want to miss out in the investigation puts themselves into danger after their Dad had safely sent them to live with his sister at the beach.
Awkward writing style and excessive use of adjects with her characters snarling, sneering etc. mars this book's first fifty or so pages. The plot becomes increasingly complex with multiple murders spanning 50 years and across the globe, family secrets, runaway suspects, and secrets held by the guilty and the innocent alike. Carr weaves a web bringing all the suttle and not so suttle clues together in a neat package. With editing, this book will make a name for Lauren in the mystery circle "Hall of Fame."
