Sixteen years old Susannah has lived her entire life in New York City until her mother remarried and relocated them to Northern California. Susannah feels good for her mother, but worries about adjusting to a new home with a stepfather and three stepbrothers. She also fears the unknown because Susannah is a Mediator, an individual who communicates, fights, and sends ghosts on to their next destination.

On the first day at her new school, Susannah confronts Heather, a ghost who committed suicide when her boyfriend ended their relationship. Heather wants to return to her mortal life. She will hurt anyone in the way of accomplishing that deed. This places Susannah in danger, as she knows she must send Heather to the beyond where she belongs.

Teenagers who enjoy the Buffy stories will gain pleasure from this novel due to the tough yet sweet teenage heroine. The paranormal elements feel real making the audience believe that ghosts and an afterlife exist. SHADOWLAND proves that Jenny Carroll is a quality storyteller whose writing gives teens a pleasurable reading experience.
