Classification Adult fiction (thriller)

Jack Hunt leaves Dublin to work in the best hospital in Chicago. He is appointed head of the cardiac unit and everything is rosy. However, suddenly, he finds himself attacked, his house vandalised, under surveillance and eventually, he is sacked and disgraced. Not willing to give up, he decides to fight back and find out exactly what is going on.

Carson's two previous novels were enjoyable thrillers and this one is no different. The pace is fast and interesting, with Carson ensuring that all loose ends are tied up at the end of the book. He paints an interesting picture of Jack Hunt, a driven man, but the reactions of his wife Beth did not just ring true, seeming unrealistic.

The idea of a medical conspiracy has been done to death by many authors, amongst them Robin Cook and Michael Palmer. Carson's thriller is a good effort, which will certainly push him up the ladder in this world. The only problem is that he lacks the renown of these other authors, except in Ireland, where 'Scalpel' stayed at the top of the charts for seventeen weeks. If more can discover Carson, he is guaranteed success.
