Alafair is determined to find the murderer of a local woman. Although she has her hands full with Grace, the new baby, and all of her every day chores she can’t ignore the fact that Alice has become interested in Walter Kelly, the town’s barber.

Walter is a young widower whose wife was found under a log in Cane Creek by two of Alafair’s boys. She had a knife sticking out of her chest.

Walter was out of town when the murder occurred but since the real culprit hasn’t been brought to justice Alafair does not want Alice involved with Walter until the matter is settled.

The further Alafair digs into the death of Walter’s wife the more questions arise.

Donis Casey makes the life and times of Alafair seem to come to life in the pages of her books.
