Series: Jack Reacher # 8
Jack Reacher, the popular protagonist of several earlier novels, returns in this story set in the early 1990's - as the Berlin Wall was coming down and the Soviet Union was entering its final months. Reachers is still in the military serving as an MP, and we get a glimpse of what made him the man we know from the earlier books in this series.
The story opens with a two star general suffering a fatal heart attack in a compromising situation. Reacher's MP unit is called upon to investigate and he immediately realizes that the general's briefcase is missing. Three other deaths follow in fairly short order but as Reacher attempts to persue his investigation he is abruptly ordered to stop his inquiries.
And we return to the "lone wolf" action we are so familiar with, for Reacher disobeys orders, and using forged travel vouchers and calling in favors from colleages in Europe and across the US, he trackes a trail of corruption and unchecked ambition arising from the changes facing the Army as the Cold War draws to a close and hotspots in the Balkans, the Middle East and Asia rise on the horizon.
