Series: Scobie Malone # 19
2003, HarperCollins, 260 pages/ 17.99 pounds

Scobie Malone has one more case in Homicide and then he’s off to enjoy (or not) his promotion. The case he’s working is running parallel to a kidnapping. In the course of the abduction the maid was killed. The kidnapping victim is the head of a dot.com company that is shooting straight down the tubes. Of course the kidnappers didn’t know that when they snatched the victim ( who was dancing around his apartment in a lovely blue dress).

The case gets stranger and stranger as it goes on. A wife shows up, the victim goes through a few different phases dealing with being abducted. The Yakuza getting involved doesn’t make things any easier either. And Malone is trying to deal with the changes coming in his career. The ending is a bit of surprise and I sure didn’t see it coming.

Deftly written characters that come to life. If this is the end of the series, it is a nice send off. I would highly recommend this book.
