In a departure from her Vicky Holden and Father John O'Malley series, in Blood Memory Coel introduces us to Catherine McLeod a newspaper reporter. While leaving the familiar characters behind, Coel stays with the perils of the Arapaho Indians with this book.
While covering a story on the land deal that would get the Arapaho and Cheyenne Indian tribes to drop their reparation claims in return for five hundred acres of land in a prime location to build a casino, Catherine apparently hits too close to the truth behind the deal and becomes a target of an assassin. The problem is, there are several local reporters covering the case and she seems to be the only target. Why? What has she stumbled across that either only she would understand or the others haven't found? The race between the assassin getting Catherine or Catherine finding the truth behind the land deal makes for a suspense filled read that will have readers staying up late to finish.
Adding interest to the book and taking it beyond “just another suspenseful read” is the depth of Catherine as a character. Left orphaned at a young age, she has only vague memories of her mother and but glimmerings of memories of names and people in her past. While by the end of the book readers have at least an outline of her life, it left this reader wanting to know Catherine better. Billed as a stand alone novel, the protagonist in Blood Memory certainly appears to have the potential to return again and could possibly even join forces with Vicky and Father John at some point. Let's hope readers have not seen the last of Catherine.
